Corinna Schumacher reminisces about the 1994 season with Michael Schumacher's helmet

Corinna Schumacher, wife of German Formula One legend Michael Schumacher, recalls memories of the 1994 season, simply by looking at the helmet that her husband wore in the year that changed his career and the history of the sport.

“When that helmet entered the game, it was always exciting,” Corinna said of the black, red and gold helmet. "It was the beginning of something big."

Hence the inspiration for the title of the new documentary film, “Schumacher 94: The Birth of a Legend,” which will be shown on Netflix on October 2nd, and recalls the details of the season in which Schumacher, who was 25 years old at the time, won the first of his seven world championship titles.

The film, which is more than 100 minutes long, documents a season full of tension inside and outside the track, and witnessed power struggles, behind-the-scenes maneuvers, and confrontations between the veteran drivers and the rising German star, during which Schumacher even considered retiring.

Corinna plays the role of the main narrator, revealing aspects of her husband's private life and their relationship that ended in marriage in 1995.

“Michael knew that my heart was with him when he won, and also when he lost,” she said. "People can say a lot about Michael, but no one knows him like me."

Schumacher's two sons followed in their father's footsteps in sports, as Gina, 29 years old, practices equestrianism, while Mick, 27 years old, competes in the American "IndyCar" series, having previously participated in "Formula One."

Schumacher began his career in Formula One in 1991, before winning his first world title in 1994. The documentary recalls his victories in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and IDA, Japan, in addition to the tragedy at the Imola circuit, one of the saddest moments in the history of the championship.

Brazilian Rubens Barrichello survived a serious accident, while Austrian Roland Ratzenberger died during testing, before Brazilian Ayrton Senna lost his life in an accident during the race the next day. Although Schumacher won the race, he lost one of his most prominent role models.

The film sheds light on the fears and doubts that Schumacher experienced at the time, as his former manager Willie Weber remembers that the German driver told him after the race that he did not want to continue.

The season also witnessed a series of penalties and disputes. Schumacher ignored the black flags at Silverstone, was disqualified after coming second in the British Grand Prix, was forced to withdraw from the German Grand Prix in front of 150,000 spectators, and was stripped of his victory in Belgium due to a violation related to the flooring of his car.

He was also suspended for two races, amid widespread criticism in the German press, which called him “Schumel Schumi” or “Deceitful Schumi,” against the backdrop of controversy over his actions during the races.

The decisive decision came in Adelaide, where Schumacher collided with his title rival, Damon Hill, and the two withdrew from the race. The German had a lead of only one point before the final round, thus securing his first world title.

Corinna summed up that season by saying: “He only ran 12 races due to penalties and exclusions, while the others ran 16 races. “He gave a great performance and, as we know, there was still a lot ahead of him.”
