The 2026 Taoyuan mayoral election is gradually heating up. Local people analyze that in the past four years since Zhang Shanzheng has been in power, the impression that "the mayor is distant from the local area and slow in promoting municipal administration" has gradually accumulated, which even reminds some local people of the former county magistrate Wu Zhiyang who failed to be re-elected. On the other hand, the Democratic Progressive Party's Taoyuan mayor candidate Huang Shijie has relied on solid land battles to increase his popularity, and the outcome is still uncertain.
Historically, the Taoyuan mayoral election has not always attracted the most attention in the country. However, the recent elections have been "exciting and promising", including Wu Zhiyang's unexpected defeat in the first campaign for promotion and actual re-election, and the failure of former mayor Zheng Wencan to hand over the baton to former legislator Zheng Yunpeng, which has shocked the outside world.
Talking about the 2026 election between Zhang Shanzheng and Huang Shijie, a local person familiar with the political situation in Taoyuan said that Zhang Shanzheng was expected to have a scientific and professional image when he took office. However, in the past four years, the most common comments heard in the local area are that "the mayor cannot be found" and "the mayor is too far away from the local area." This "sense of invisibility" is very different from Zheng Wencan's. Coupled with the arrogant impression of the ruler, it may become a turning point in the later stages of the election.
Local people pointed out that in addition to the traditional blue-green base, the young generation aged 30 to 40 may become the key to this election. This group of people is in the stage of heaviest pressure from work, starting a family, buying a house, and raising children. They care more about daily commuting, housing and other immediate issues than political slogans. "Technological law enforcement" and "affordable housing" are the two most direct examples.
Taoyuan's technological enforcement has caused a lot of controversy in recent years. Among them, after the implementation of technological enforcement at the Longgang Underground and Yongle intersection in Zhongli, nearly 3,000 fines were issued in just over a month, which also raised questions about whether the signs are clear and whether the enforcement is reasonable. The person said, "Everyone supports traffic safety, but whether technological enforcement improves traffic or becomes a tool for issuing fines is something that citizens feel most directly."
Huang Shijie recently proposed the rationalization of technological law enforcement, advocating the public setting of standards and the establishment of a persuasion mechanism to return law enforcement to the purpose of improving traffic safety. Local people believe that such issues may not seem as grand as large-scale construction, but they occur in citizens' lives every day, making it easier to accumulate evaluations of municipal governance.
Another issue that young adults are highly sensitive to is housing. Zhang Shanzheng strongly promotes "affordable housing" and increases housing supply through volume incentives and private donations. However, local people question that the most practical question still needs to be answered in the end. Are banks willing to lend and what percentage of the loan can they lend? If the loan mechanism is not explained clearly and we rush to regard "affordability" as a political achievement, I am afraid that in the end, the house prices will be cheaper on paper, but people will still be able to see and afford them because they can't get loans and high self-prepared funds. "Real affordability is not something that the city government has the final say, but that ordinary families can really afford and get loans."
As for young families who cannot yet afford to buy a house, social housing is equally important. Huang Shijie's camp had previously questioned that in 2025 and 2026, Taoyuan had no city-owned social housing construction started for 15 months in total. Local people pointed out that on the one hand, Zhang City Government talks about "affordable housing", but on the other hand, people who really need social housing are still waiting. The housing policy ultimately has to focus on whether it can truly reduce the living burden.
According to local analysis, Zhang Shanzheng's advantage is still the popularity and administrative resources of the current mayor, but his nearly four years in power also means that all municipal performance must be tested by voters; Huang Shijie's challenge is whether he can transform the feelings of the young and middle-aged generation on life issues such as transportation and housing into expectations for the next four years.
"Zhang Shanzheng's real opponent now is not just Huang Shijie, but the people's life experience accumulated over the past four years." Local people estimate that if Huang Shijie can continue to bring the election campaign back to municipal issues that citizens feel, and let voters start to compare "who can make Taoyuan move in the next four years," there is still considerable room for change in the Taoyuan election.
