Trump advisers warn of risk of conflict with Iran dragging on until 2029

Senior advisers to US President Donald Trump are warning him of the risk of prolonging the conflict with Iran until the end of his presidential term in January 2029, the Wall Street Journal claims, citing informed sources.

"Senior White House advisers in private conversations with President Trump raised the possibility that the war with Iran could drag on until the end of his presidential term," the newspaper writes.

According to the publication, Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other officials discussed with the president a scenario in which Tehran would continue to resist despite a naval blockade and economic sanctions from Washington.

At the same time, Trump himself publicly assesses the timing of the end of the conflict much more optimistically, telling reporters that the war will end immediately after the November congressional elections.

On the night of June 18, Tehran and Washington signed a memorandum that envisaged the end of the conflict that began on February 28. However, the US military carried out several series of strikes against Iran in July. US Central Command claimed that this was done in response to Iranian actions against commercial ships that were crossing the Strait of Hormuz.

Tehran responded with strikes on US bases in a number of Middle Eastern countries, closed the Strait of Hormuz, and also accused Washington of violating the memorandum on the cessation of hostilities.
