Lake Powell's level has dropped to a record low in its history

تفاقم أزمة الجفاف في نهر كولورادو يهدد إمدادات المياه والطاقة الكهرومائية لملايين السكان غرب الولايات المتحدة

Quick Look

Lake Powell, the second largest reservoir in the United States, has reached its lowest water level ever, threatening the ability of Glen Canyon Dam to generate hydroelectric power and exacerbating the drought crisis affecting the vital Colorado River.

Why It Matters

تسببت سنوات من الجفاف وارتفاع درجات الحرارة والاستهلاك الكثيف في تقلص حجم نهر كولورادو بنحو 20% منذ عام 2000.

Lake Powell is the second largest reservoir in the United States. The lake provides water and electricity to millions of residents in the west of the country. But its water levels have dropped to the lowest level ever recorded, in the latest indicator of the alarming crisis witnessed by the Colorado River, which is severely affected by drought.

The reservoir level dropped to 1,072.86 meters on Saturday, breaking the previous record for the lowest level, which was 1,072.87 metres, which was recorded in April 2023, according to data published by the US Bureau of Reclamation on Sunday.

There is currently less than 30 feet (9.1 metres) left to reach the point at which the dam will no longer generate hydroelectric power.

This record comes just nine days after the level of Lake Mead, which is located downstream and is the largest water reservoir in the United States, dropped to its lowest level since it was first filled nine decades ago.

“We are living in an unprecedented situation,” said Jack Schmidt, director of the Center for Colorado River Studies at Utah State University.

Lakes Mead and Powell, which actually form a massive water reservoir separated by the Grand Canyon, contain just under 60% of the total water currently stored in the Colorado River Basin.

This unprecedented drop in the levels of the two water bodies shows the seriousness of the situation facing the river that feeds them.

The Colorado River is known as the “lifeline” of the southwestern United States, providing water to about 40 million people and irrigating more than 5 million acres of agricultural land across seven states: California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah.

Drought and rising temperatures caused by climate change, combined with years of heavy water consumption, have caused the volume of this vital waterway to shrink by about 20% since 2000, and Lakes Mead and Powell have been severely affected.

This reservoir is often referred to as a water “bank account” that can be tapped during drought years to supply cities, farms and businesses with their water needs downstream.

The water level in the lake has always fluctuated, but this year (as it has in many recent years) Lake Powell suffered from a lack of snowfall, as last winter was one of the driest and warmest in the history of the western United States.

The impact of fluctuations on power generation is a major concern. The force of the Colorado River's flow drives the eight massive turbines at Glen Canyon Dam, generating enough electricity to power about 500,000 homes annually.

Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, and Nebraska depend on this energy.

The reservoir water is now rapidly moving toward what is known as the “minimum power plant operating level,” during which the water level will drop to 1,063.75 metres, the point at which water levels will become too low to operate the turbines.

Brad Udall, a senior water and climate researcher at Colorado State University, said the “worrying milestone” will be reached this year if “extraordinary measures” are not taken.

He added that these measures include reducing the amounts of water discharged from Lake Powell and the areas located upstream of the river.

For his part, a spokesman for the Bureau of Reclamation said that the Bureau and the Department of the Interior remain “committed to reducing the collective risk of water levels in Lake Powell and Lake Mead falling below critical levels to protect critical infrastructure and ensure that the river basin’s water and hydropower needs continue to be met.”

Currently, experts do not believe that household faucets will run dry. The Colorado River crisis is developing slowly, and many water management officials have taken proactive steps to prepare for it.

There is hope that the El Niño weather phenomenon, which usually brings more rain and snow to the southwest, will help improve the situation.

However, experts believe that it will take more than just one winter of heavy rain and snow to reduce the Colorado River crisis.

Porter stressed: “Even if we see record snow accumulations this winter, that will not be enough to get us out of danger.”
