The European Union and Canada plan to create a strategic alliance

The European Union and Canada plan to announce on September 16 the creation of a strategic alliance in the fields of trade, defense and technology in order to jointly resist economic and political pressure from the United States and China, Bloomberg reports, citing knowledgeable sources.

"The European Union and Canada are working on a new, comprehensive relationship, from trade to security, seeking to create a new alliance to counterbalance global power politics dominated by the United States and China. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is expected to announce these plans on September 16," the agency writes.

Von der Leyen plans to announce the new alliance with Ottawa during his annual State of the Union address to MEPs in Strasbourg, France. The event will also be attended by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who will also speak to European legislators the next day, the publication notes.

According to agency sources, Ottawa and Brussels are striving for extremely deep legal and economic rapprochement without Canada joining the European Union.

The new agreement will cover all key areas of cooperation - from trade, supply chains and critical raw materials to security, with a special emphasis on defense, space exploration and scientific research, the agency said.

According to sources, the parties plan to hold a summit in Canada in October.
