In the Far East, they are planning to build two hospices for injured Amur tigers, which cannot be released into the wild and transferred to zoos.

Hospices will be built in Primorye and Khabarovsk Territory next to rehabilitation centers and are designed to accommodate 10 individuals each.

After the construction of hospices, they will be transferred to the balance of the state.

VLADIVOSTOK, September 4 – RIA Novosti. Two hospices for injured Amur tigers, which cannot be released into the wild and transferred to zoos, will be built in the Far East, General Director of the Amur Tiger Center Sergei Aramilev said in an interview with RIA Novosti at the Eastern Economic Forum.

“We plan to build hospices in the regions. Now a significant part of the hospices that are ready to take such large animals are located in the western part of Russia. It is not entirely correct to transport animals across the country that can be provided with care here. We need at least two hospices - in Primorye and in the Khabarovsk Territory. They should be close to rehabilitation centers,” Aramilev said.

He noted that tigers will live in hospices, which can no longer be sent to the zoo, because they need special care, constant monitoring and frequent examinations. Initially, they will be designed to accommodate 10 individuals each, but in the future the premises may be expanded.

“That is, the task is to create such a complete complex that it will be possible to work with all the animals in the region. I think that construction in Primorye can begin this winter. Now we are selecting a location and documenting everything. Taking into account the fact that these are injured animals, large territories are not needed. If the animal has difficulty walking, it needs a small enclosure,” Aramilev noted.

He said that after the construction of hospices they will be transferred to the balance of the state.

In September 2025, the first stage of Russia’s first state center for the rehabilitation of wild animals was opened in the protective zone of the Ussuri Nature Reserve in Primorye. A similar center is being built in the Khabarovsk Territory.

The Amur tiger is one of the rarest predators on the planet and is listed in the International Red Book. In Russia, these cats live on the territory of four subjects: Primorsky and Khabarovsk territories, Amur region and Jewish Autonomous Region. According to the latest data, there are about 750 tigers in Russia.
