Reuters reported that a fishing vessel identified as a Chinese maritime militia vessel was operating together with two Chinese vessels in the Pacific Ocean east of Taiwan in August, marking the first time such a vessel was spotted in the waters. Experts analyzed that the ship may carry out surveillance, intelligence collection or undersea infrastructure reconnaissance missions. Taiwan officials pointed out that its activities were close to adjacent areas. The United States criticized China's destructive behavior, and the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said its actions were legitimate and legal. As the frequency of China's activities in Taitung waters increases, analysts believe that Beijing is expanding its presence and strengthening its maritime rights claims through the coordinated operation of coast guard, scientific research ships and maritime militia ships.

A U.S. Marine Corps MV-22B Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft caught fire after a hard landing during a training mission near Bladen Lake State Forest in North Carolina. The four Marines on board were sent to the hospital for evaluation. At least one of them suffered burns. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

The Chinese-made submarine prototype Haikun (SS-711) will begin a deep-water submersible test in the deep sea waters around Taiwan in late October. This is the last hurdle before delivery. The test will verify the submarine's ability to adapt to high-pressure and low-temperature environments at a water depth of more than 100 meters. If successful, it is expected to be delivered to the Navy before the end of the year.

At the AUSA Annual Meeting in Washington, defence contractors highlighted advances in air and missile defence systems amid ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, with Lockheed Martin showcasing ER GMLRS and PrSM missiles launched from HIMARS platforms.

U.S. defense startup Ursa Major has won two U.S. military contracts worth a total of $137 million to develop solid rocket motors for the Compact Air-to-Air Missile (CAAM) and the Naval Modular Missile (NMM). CAAM aims to increase the internal bomb load of stealth fighters, while NMM adopts a quadruple-mount design and plans to replace the standard series of missiles in 2032. The company will use additive manufacturing technology to accelerate research and development and mass production.
