Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Jakarta suspended operations due to ash from the Anak Krakatau volcano

Indonesia's largest airport, Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Jakarta, temporarily ceased operations due to volcanic ash following the eruption of the Anak Krakatau volcano. The restrictions affected more than 30 flights, reports the Indonesian publication ANTARA News.

The decision to close the airport was made after the discovery of volcanic ash in the air harbor area.

Indonesian Civil Aviation Director General Lukman F. Laisa said 33 flights were seriously affected by the ash spread. The largest number of violations occurred on international routes: 16 flights were cancelled, seven were delayed, and five more were rescheduled. Air traffic between Jakarta and Singapore, Hong Kong, Sydney, Seoul, Doha, Amsterdam and Kuala Lumpur have been interrupted or disrupted.

In addition, four domestic flights were canceled and one plane was diverted to another airport. The restrictions affected, in particular, flights to Bali, as well as to Surabaya and Lampung.

Indonesian aviation authorities have warned of possible further disruptions, including problems with aircraft rotations, a shortage of reserve aircraft, more delays and increased pressure on passenger terminals.
