Kaifeng is the "ancient capital of eight dynasties" in China and was called Tokyo City during the Northern Song Dynasty. The museum has a total construction area of ​​over 16,000 square meters. It was built on the original site of the Shuntianmen site of Tokyo City in the Northern Song Dynasty. It is the first archaeological site museum in Kaifeng and the first special museum to protect and display the Tokyo City site in the Northern Song Dynasty.

From the appearance, the overall architectural layout of the museum replicates the structure of a square urn city. The appearance of the main building is based on the design of Xuande Gate in the imperial city during the Northern Song Dynasty, and was inspired by the "Auspicious Crane Picture" by Emperor Huizong of the Northern Song Dynasty.

Entering the exhibition hall of the museum, the "treasures of the museum" Kalingbinga and the dragon-headed beast stand in the "C position" of the exhibition hall. The commentator said that the Jialing Pinga is the frontmost decorative component of the city gate's vertical ridge, and the dragon-headed beast is an important component of the wooden architecture of the Song Dynasty. "Both of them are the exclusive 'identity certificates' of the capital-level city gates of the Northern Song Dynasty."

The relevant person in charge of the Shuntianmen Site Museum in Tokyo City of the Northern Song Dynasty said that the exhibitions in the museum rely on the results of archaeological excavations and use cultural relic display, simulated sand table, gauze film, tri-fold screen, three-dimensional projection, scene interaction and other methods to comprehensively display strata, ruins and relics, aiming to create a museum that can "tell stories".

The Shuntianmen site of Tokyo City in the Northern Song Dynasty retains not only the main city gate of the Song Dynasty, the rammed earth buildings in the urn city, but also the marching stoves of the Yuan Dynasty, kiln sites of the Ming Dynasty, courtyards and wells of the Qing Dynasty. On the central axis, seven layers of roads from the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties are stacked on top of each other from bottom to top, presenting the wonder of "city upon city" in Kaifeng City.
