The veterinarian told how to protect pets from overheating in the heat

Even while at home, cats and dogs can overheat, said Elena Frolenko, a veterinarian at the company that produces natural diets SUPERPET. She shared her opinion in a conversation with Lenta.ru.

The expert advised trying to create a comfortable room temperature for your pet and placing several bowls of cool water around the apartment. She said that long-haired animals, brachycephalics (pugs, French bulldogs, Pekingese, Persian and other short-faced cats), elderly pets, animals with heart problems and excess weight endure the heat especially hard.

To avoid overheating, the veterinarian advised maintaining a comfortable temperature in the room of 20-25 degrees. When using an air conditioner, she recommended not placing your pet's bed directly under it and directing the air up rather than down.

“In the heat, the animal’s body loses significantly more fluid. Therefore, fresh, cool water should be available around the clock. It is better to place several bowls in different rooms or use drinking fountains, which cats especially like. Additionally, cooling mats, darkened rooms, and being on the tiles in the bathroom or in the sink will help the animal survive the heat,” the veterinarian added.

She also noted that it is best to feed cats and dogs a high-protein, wet diet during hot weather. But you shouldn’t force your pet to eat in the heat if he refuses, Frolenko emphasized.

“In hot weather, animals’ appetite often decreases. This is a normal reaction of the body. You shouldn't force yourself to eat. It is better to offer food in the morning and evening hours when the temperature is lower. Pets on a natural diet usually have an easier time staying hydrated due to the high moisture content in the diet. When feeding dry food, it is necessary to especially carefully monitor the amount of water you drink,” concluded the veterinarian.
