The number of heat-related deaths in Spain this summer reached 4,458, a new high since 2022

(Central News Agency, Madrid, Comprehensive Foreign Reports on the 20th) According to data reviewed by AFP today from the Carlos III Health Institute, Spain has recorded 4,458 heat-related deaths so far on June 1, the highest number for the same period since 2022.

Agence France-Presse reported that in comparison, 3,073 heat-related deaths were recorded in the same period last year, and 1,890 in 2024.

Spain recorded 4,458 heat-related deaths from June 1 to August 19, the highest number since 4,520 heat-related deaths were recorded in the same period in 2022.

These figures are estimated using data from the Spanish Mortality Monitoring System (MoMo). The system tracks daily death rates across Spain and compares them with historical trends.

The system also incorporates external factors, such as weather data from the National Meteorological Service (AEMET), to assess possible causes of sudden increases in mortality.

While the Mortality Surveillance System cannot confirm a direct causal link between deaths and heat, it provides the most reliable estimate of deaths in which heat may be a determining factor.
