(Rome = Yonhap News) Correspondent Min Gyeong-rak = U.S. President Donald Trump's special envoy, who mediates the end-of-war negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, met with Russian President Vladimir Putin and then Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to continue discussions on the end of the war on the 6th (local time).

According to Reuters and AFP, U.S. Presidential Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and President Trump's eldest son-in-law Jared Kushner visited Kiev on this day and discussed the end-of-war plan with President Zelenskyy.

“It was a substantive and important discussion, and I was very encouraged,” said Special Envoy Wittkoff after the three-hour meeting, including lunch. “I hope this visit will lead to new progress,” said Special Envoy Kushner.

They plan to hold an additional meeting later in the day, with national security advisers from the UK, France and Germany also participating.

This is the first time that U.S. envoys have visited Kiiwu. They have been mediating discussions on the end of the war between the two countries, but have been criticized for being relatively negligent in Ukraine's position, visiting only Moscow eight times.

Previously, President Zelenskyy said on social media, "Our proposal is ready, and it is important to negotiate substantively and realistically in a coordinated manner," and emphasized, "Security guarantees are necessary."

The day before, they met with President Putin at the Kremlin Palace and discussed a plan to end the war. The Russian side announced that it had conveyed to the United States its existing position that it could occupy the eastern Donbas region, which is in a stalemate, by force.

During negotiations early this year, Ukraine rejected Russia's request to cede the Donbas region and has adhered to the current plan to freeze the front line.

Given that the series of meetings between U.S. envoys to Presidents Putin and Zelenskyy took place amid the recent intensification of conflict between the two sides, attention is focused on the possibility of resuming previous negotiations. The previous negotiations, mediated by the United States, were suspended in February of this year due to the aftermath of the Middle East crisis. Both sides agreed not to attack each other's capital for three days to allow for a series of meetings of U.S. envoys.

However, the prevailing view is that there is a long way to go until the actual end of the war, as both sides are sticking to their respective positions in a situation where neither side can clearly take the initiative.

Both sides continued their attacks last night, targeting areas other than the capital, ahead of the U.S. envoy's visit to Chiiu.

According to local Russian authorities, Ukrainian forces attacked the Ryazan oil refinery, one of Russia's largest oil refineries. The Russian military said it hit a Ukrainian cargo ship in the Black Sea and two Ukrainian military logistics centers in the Odessa region.
