Memorial Day of the Holy Prophet Jonah
Prophet Jonah, one of the great prophets of Israel, is known for his unique story, described in the book of the same name in the Old Testament. Jesus appeared to him and ordered him to preach to the inhabitants of the city of Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrian empire, known for its sins and immorality. Frightened, Jonah tried to escape by ship - but suddenly a severe storm broke out. Jonah realized that God was angry at his misdeed, and in order to save the sailors he asked to sacrifice himself. The frightened sailors immediately threw him overboard. The storm instantly subsided, and Jonah was swallowed by a whale, in whose belly he sat for three days, praying for salvation.
Soon the whale washed ashore and tore Jonah out of itself. God appeared to him again and again called him to go preach to Nineveh. Jonah obeyed the Lord and was able to fulfill his request, converting the inhabitants of the city to Orthodoxy.
