'Severance Hospital knife attack': woman in her 50s detained... gibberish answer

The Seoul Western District Court will hold a pre-arrest interrogation (substantive warrant review) of A, a woman in her 50s suspected of attempted murder, from 3 p.m. on the 7th.

Mr. A is accused of injuring the face and hands of Professor Kang of the Department of Psychiatry by swinging a weapon he had in the treatment room on the 5th floor of Sinchon Severance Hospital at around 4:35 pm on the 4th.

Mr. A, who entered the court at 2:13 p.m. on this day to attend the examination, responded to a reporter's question, "Why did you swing a weapon at the doctor?" and uttered gibberish, saying, "In 2018, Yonsei University Psychiatry Department did not provide internal medical treatment and caused diabetes."

He then shouted, “Yonsei University made him a criminal,” and “It ended his life, broke his family, and made him a maruta.”

He did not answer the question, “Do you feel sorry for the victim?”

At the time of the crime, the victim, Professor Kang, called a patient other than Mr. A to the clinic, and it is known that Mr. A followed the called patient into the clinic and took out a weapon and brandished it.

Professor Kang suffered a stab wound about 5 cm long and was taken to the emergency room for treatment. It was confirmed that there was no life-threatening injury.

Initially, the Seodaemun Police Station arrested Mr. A on charges of special injury, but based on the fact that Mr. A stated that he had put a kitchen knife that he used at home in a shopping bag, they considered that there was intent to commit murder at the time of the crime and charged him with attempted murder.

During the police investigation, Mr. A was found to have said about the motive for the crime, "I tried to go to another hospital, but I was angry because the doctor at Severance Hospital teamed up with another hospital and prevented me from going for treatment (to another hospital)."
