VLADIVOSTOK, October 2 - RIA Novosti. The creation of underwater robots for resource extraction and underwater plants for their processing is a promising direction in the development of the World Ocean, Academician Yuri Kulchin, Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Chairman of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told RIA Novosti.
Earlier, in an interview with RIA Novosti, Kulchin said that specialists from the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences are preparing the concept of the federal scientific research program “Advanced methods and means for studying and developing the resources of the World Ocean.”
Kulchin noted that ocean exploration at great depths should be carried out using underwater robots with artificial intelligence.
“It is important to create robotic systems that can explore the ocean and develop resources. There is a problem associated with the search for special materials that can work in such conditions, the search for mechanisms that can work in this environment, as well as the possibility of generating energy for robots. Now we are working very closely in this direction,” said Kulchin.
According to him, bringing to the surface unprocessed resources mined at great depths is irrational.
“Therefore, it is necessary to create new automated factories at the bottom - underwater factories. This is the future, of course, but it must be done. And we are now actively working in this direction. I think that these are already immediate prospects, because we have exhausted many resources on Earth, and now they can only be taken in the ocean. Therefore, this is a matter of decades,” the scientist added.
Speaking about the concept of the federal program “Advanced methods and means for studying and developing the resources of the World Ocean,” he noted that it has already been formed.

The Crew Dragon spacecraft carrying Russian cosmonaut Sergey Teteryatnikov, NASA astronauts Jessica Watkins and Luke Delaney, and CSA astronaut Joshua Kutryk docked with the International Space Station after a record-breaking seven-hour and 55-minute flight from Cape Canaveral, marking the fastest crewed journey to the ISS in history.

The skeleton of the trogontherian elephant, the ancestor of the mammoth, restored using 3D printing, will be installed in the Perm Museum of Local Lore. The bones were printed from plastic based on a digital model of the remains found in the Okhansky region in 2013. The exhibit will be delivered disassembled in October, after which it will be tinted and assembled in the “Permian period” exhibition.

NASA launched the Crew-13 mission from Florida. Russian cosmonaut Sergei Teteryatnikov and astronauts from the USA and Canada went to the ISS on board the Crew Dragon spacecraft.

RAS scientists proposed building low-rise buildings in earthquake-prone regions of Russia after the earthquake in Kamchatka. According to academician Yuri Kulchin, the practice should be introduced in Kamchatka, Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands.

Geology professor Philipp Ruprecht has warned that a large eruption of the Yellowstone supervolcano in the United States could cause global food shortages and affect the entire planet, but the likelihood of such an event in the near future is extremely low.
