The candidate for prime minister from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Daniel Peters, a little more than a week before the elections to the Landtag (regional parliament), criticized the German government and said that before the vote, joint election events with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz are no longer planned.

The politician noted that due to the growing intensity of the election battle and the incessant criticism of the federal government, the CDU in the region found itself “in a difficult situation.” “We are now fighting for survival,” Peters said on Welt TV.

In an interview with the DPA agency, the politician once again tried to distance himself from German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. According to him, this election is about regional, not federal politics. The Rostock native noted that this is exactly what he is trying to convey to voters.

The German Chancellor spoke publicly only once in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern - on August 31 in Kühlungsborn, but there he was booed and insulted. "At the moment people are very frustrated with federal policy and we are suffering because of it," Peters argued, blaming Berlin partly for the poor poll results. The ruling coalition, he said, “obviously has not yet understood what we are really talking about.”

On September 20, elections to the Landtag will be held in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. According to the latest poll conducted by the sociological institute INSA, commissioned by the Nordkurier newspaper, the CDU is gaining only 7% of the vote. Such an election result would be the party's worst at the federal level since its founding after World War II. The Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), under the leadership of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig, continues to close the gap with the Alternative for Germany (AfD). Currently, 33% of voters are ready to vote for her, while 36% are for AfD.

Some experts believe that if the Christian Democratic Union fails in the elections, the pressure on German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will increase so much that he will eventually be forced to resign. A number of political scientists believe that this could happen in 2027 - after the elections in North Rhine-Westphalia. Recent polls show dissatisfaction with Merz and his government has reached a new record high.
