A 26-year-old man surnamed Hu was hit hard on the head while participating in the "Big Fist Boxing Friendly Match" held by Xindian Boxing Club in New Taipei City in 2022 and died in hospital. The Taipei District Prosecutor's Office prosecuted club leader Ding Haofeng, who is also an international one-star boxing coach, A-level national boxing coach and referee, on charges of negligent death. After a trial, the Taipei District Court found that Ding Nan was not guilty enough and sentenced him not guilty. After the case was appealed, the High Court changed the sentence to Ding Nan for six months in prison and a fine for negligent death. The case was appealed, and the Supreme Court rejected the appeal and the entire case was settled.
The person in charge of the Xindian Boxing Club is Ding Haofeng. Ding Nan is also the coach of the boxing gym. On July 30, 2022, the boxing gym held the "11th National Big Fist Boxing Friendly Tournament". The male boxer surnamed Hu signed up for the 75-80kg event and fought against the 29-year-old man surnamed Xu.
During the start of the match, Hu Nan was hit hard on the head and chin by the opponent's punches. After the first round, when Hu Nan returned to the sidelines to rest, he suddenly became weak and felt nauseous. In the second round of the final match, Hu Nan was hit on the right side of the head again and fell to the ground. After getting up, he was hit on the head again. In the end, the referee decided that Xu Nan had won.
However, after Hu Nan continued to feel dizzy and even lost consciousness, he almost collapsed to the ground. Upon seeing this, Hu Nan's girlfriend immediately called an ambulance. When Hu Nan was carried into the ambulance, he fell into a coma. After the rescue, he was still pronounced dead. The cause of death was massive intracranial hemorrhage, brain displacement leading to brain death, etc.
After the investigation, the Beijing Inspection and Quarantine Bureau held that the person in charge of the match, Ding Nan, knew the technical and competition rules of the International Boxing Association and that medical personnel should be present during the match. A doctor should evaluate the suitability of the boxer according to the matters listed in the "Medical Examination Certificate" in the appendix of the International Boxing Rules before the player could participate. After the game, the medical staff should check the boxer's condition and provide necessary rescue at any time. Ding Nan should be prosecuted according to the crime of negligent death.
The Taipei District Court of First Instance held that Ding did not commit any fault that he should have paid attention to but did not pay attention to it, and was acquitted because the crime was not sufficient. After the prosecutor appealed the case, the High Court held that Ding Nan failed to have a boxing ring doctor present throughout the whole process in accordance with international boxing rules, and acted expediently by requiring the players to issue health declarations on their own. As a result, Hu Nan was unable to obtain a medical examination and professional advice before the match, and was unable to obtain necessary assistance during the boxing match. Hu Nan wasted his precious life. The high court finally revoked the first-instance verdict and sentenced Ding Nan to six months' imprisonment for negligent death, with a fine. After the case was appealed to the third instance, it was rejected by the Supreme Court and the whole case was settled.
