5,378 schools temporarily closed due to Typhoon No. 6, damage caused in 27 prefectures

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology announced on the 3rd that a total of 5,378 schools, ranging from kindergartens to universities, in 25 prefectures, mainly in the Kanto, Chubu, and Kyushu regions, were temporarily closed due to Typhoon No. 6. 1,148 schools in 27 prefectures suffered damage such as flooding above or below the floor, falling roofing materials, and rain leaks. Three elementary and junior high school students were injured in Gunma Prefecture, but all injuries were said to be minor.

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology summarized the situation as of noon on the 3rd. Schools were closed including 2,961 elementary schools, 1,463 middle schools, and 523 high schools. There were also 362 schools that implemented shortened classes.
