Electric kickboard hit-and-run driver fined for hitting 6-year-old child

A driver who hit a 6-year-old child while driving an electric scooter on the sidewalk and ran away was sentenced to a fine.

Judge Park Joo-young, Criminal Division 3 of the Busan District Court, announced on the 27th that he sentenced Mr. A, who was indicted on charges of violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes (fleeing and causing death), to a fine of 3 million won.

Mr. A is accused of running an electric kickboard on a sidewalk in Busanjin-gu, Busan at around 9:34 pm on March 29th last year when he hit a 6-year-old boy who was walking with his mother on the opposite side and ran away.

As a result of this accident, the victim suffered lower back and pelvic bruises that required treatment for approximately two weeks.

Judge Park ruled that the driver, Mr. A, had a duty of care to look ahead and to the left and right while traveling on the road and to accurately operate the steering and braking systems to prevent an accident.

However, it was confirmed that Mr. A, while driving on the sidewalk, hit the victim with the front of the electric kickboard, causing the child to fall, and then ran away without immediately stopping and taking necessary measures to provide aid.

Judge Park stated the reason for sentencing, saying, "It is advantageous to reach an agreement with the victim," but "I took into account the fact that he escaped after causing injuries to a young victim for two weeks and the fact that he had a significant criminal history."
