Wassim al-Assad was sentenced to life imprisonment for war crimes

Mustafa explained, in a statement to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), that the court relied in its ruling on two basic standards: the international standard according to international law for crimes against humanity and war crimes, and the national standard based on Syrian law, which reflects the Syrian judiciary’s commitment to internationally recognized legal standards.

The Director of the Accountability and Accountability Department revealed that the defendant, Waseem Al-Assad, did not provide essential information during the course of the trial that could contribute to revealing the responsibility of other defendants or determining their roles, which did not provide a legal basis for assessing mitigating reasons against him.

Mustafa stressed that the ruling “represents part of an ongoing judicial process to hold perpetrators of serious crimes accountable,” stressing that the criterion of responsibility is the actions and evidence proven against each accused, in a way that establishes the rule of law and ensures justice for the victims and the absence of impunity. This ruling comes within the framework of the efforts of the National Transitional Justice Authority to hold accountable those responsible for grave violations, and to achieve justice for the victims in the democratic transition.
