National Police Agency plans to launch a dedicated police reform organization next week

The National Police Agency announced on the 6th that it will launch an organization dedicated to police reform within the next week. The leader is at the level of a police officer.

The National Police Agency announced in a press notice on the 6th, "This is to keep our promise to fundamentally reform the police," and that the specific organization and direction of implementation will be explained upon launch.

Previously, the National Police Agency announced that it would establish a 'Police Reform Promotion Team' to inspect not only the organization and system, but also the on-site work performance method and organizational structure from the beginning.

Acting Police Commissioner Kim Jong-cheol received work reports from National Police Agency executives for two days starting the previous day and reviewed pending issues.

Acting Director Kim said, “It is important for field staff to clearly recognize the changed investigation procedures and implement them on site,” and instructed them to share information on the revised Criminal Procedure Act with all employees and provide sufficient training in September.

He went on to say, “For the changed criminal justice system to take root, the field is important,” and ordered, “Review personnel systems that allow excellent personnel with competency and a sense of duty to continue working without leaving the investigative department.”

Acting Director Kim emphasized, “Only when the field changes can the police organization change, and only then can the public experience changes in the police.”

At the same time, he emphasized that it is necessary to continuously check and supplement each task to ensure that there are no system problems or gaps in the command and supervision system.

In addition, he urged, “Eliminate unnecessary work in the field or actions that require unreasonable performance and actively support people to focus on their work in the field.”

Regarding the report that the number of traffic accident deaths as of August this year was about 100 fewer than last year, he said, "Reducing traffic accident deaths is a representative task for the police to save people's lives," and instructed, "We should focus more on efforts such as traffic order compliance, enforcement, and facility improvement."

Acting Director Kim said, "The police's role in protecting the lives of the people is more important than anything else," and urged the police to actively communicate with the field regarding the work being carried out at the National Police Agency level.

In particular, the National Police Agency said that it was emphasized that overall police activities should not only be limited to crackdowns and investigations, but should also be organically linked to crime prevention, victim protection, and after-care support.

The National Police Agency explained, "This report was unusually conducted over the weekend in order to prepare for the implementation of the revised Criminal Procedure Act without a hitch and to promote fundamental reform of the police at a speedy pace."
