Current inspection situation of micro electric two-wheelers in Taichung: speeding and modification problems are common

There are currently more than 50,000 micro electric two-wheelers registered in Taichung City. The central government has stipulated that starting from November 30, 2024, micro electric two-wheelers that have not completed registration will not be allowed to drive on the road. For the sake of public safety, the Transportation Bureau will start inspecting non-compliance this year. Since the speed of two-wheeled vehicles must not exceed 25 kilometers per hour, the same model with a qualified label was found to be speeding, and one even exceeded 30 kilometers per hour. The appearance was different from the regulations. The Transportation Bureau has reported it to the Ministry of Transport to investigate the source.

The number of micro electric two-wheelers registered in Taichung City as of April this year was 51,428. For the sake of public safety, the Transportation Bureau began to cooperate with relevant units to inspect dealers this year, and found violations such as vehicles that were not inspected and did not have a qualified label, vehicles with a qualified label, but the speed was 25 kilometers per hour exceeding the maximum driving speed, and there were problems such as inconsistent appearance.

Transportation Director Ye Zhaofu said that according to Article 69-1 of the current "Road Traffic Management Punishment Regulations", micro electric two-wheelers must complete the testing and type approval procedures, register, obtain and hang license plates in accordance with the law before they can drive on the road. Starting from November 30, 2024, micro electric two-wheelers that have not completed their registration will not be allowed to drive on the road. Violators will be fined by the police in accordance with the law.

The Transportation Bureau conducted an inspection this year and found that there were actually micro electric two-wheelers with a qualified mark, which according to regulations only had a maximum speed of 25 kilometers per hour. On-site inspection showed that the same model exceeded the speed limit by 28 kilometers per hour and 30 kilometers per hour. In addition, some even had pedals or seats added to the appearance, but they all obtained the qualified mark.

The Transportation Bureau asked the operators whether they had modified them, but they all denied it and said they purchased the goods directly from the manufacturer. Therefore, whether there was a problem with the source inspection has been reported to the Ministry of Transportation.
