The collapse of a student housing building in New Delhi leads to the death of five people

Indian police said many other people may still be trapped under the rubble. No specific number was given about their number.

Local reports indicated that dozens of people may have been inside the building, which was used as student housing, at the time of the accident.

According to a statement issued by AIIMS Hospital in New Delhi, four bodies were recovered from the accident site, and another person who was taken to the hospital later died of his injuries.

NDTV reported that nine people had been rescued from the rubble since the building collapsed on Sunday afternoon in the Satya Niketan neighbourhood. There were reports that some of them were in critical condition. There was initially no official confirmation of the number of survivors, while the search for more stranded people continued until late in the evening.

The cause of the building's collapse was not known at first, as PTE, citing police sources, reported that construction work was taking place in the basement of the building. PTE quoted a local resident as saying that the ground “shaken” as the building collapsed.

Chief Minister of the Federal Capital Territory of Delhi, Rekha Gupta, expressed her deep concern over the X platform. She wrote that every effort was being made to "rescue those trapped."
