Iran proposes reopening of the Strait of Hormuz within 7 days as a condition for easing US military pressure

(Cairo = Yonhap News) Correspondent Kim Sang-hoon = Kyodo News reported on the 22nd (local time) that Iran proposed a plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within 7 days on the condition of easing military pressure from the United States in order to revive the deadlocked negotiations with the United States.

A senior Iranian government official told Kyodo News that he proposed reopening the Strait of Hormuz within a week if the United States takes initial steps to reduce military pressure.

This is interpreted to mean that Iran will further strengthen its diplomatic efforts to resume dialogue with the United States.

According to this official, in this proposal, which Iran has already delivered to the United States through a mediation agency, Iran requested the resumption of talks to permanently end the hostile relationship between the two countries.

The Iranian government plans to hold related discussions with mediating countries at the United Nations General Assembly held in New York, USA this week.

This official dismissed the possibility of a meeting between Iranian President Massoud Fezezhikian and U.S. President Donald Trump at this general meeting, but predicted that progress toward an agreement between the two countries would still be possible.

“There is a possibility to move toward an agreement,” he said, adding, “To achieve diplomatic progress, the U.S. side must show sincerity and a willingness to fulfill its promises.”

Before leaving the country to attend the United Nations General Assembly that day, President Fezeshkian declared in an interview with a state broadcaster, "I will strongly express Iran's position on the international stage."

He said, “At this UN General Assembly, we will focus on raising the issues of injustice suffered by the Iranian people, crimes committed so far, and distrust created in the international community.”

President Fezesikian continued, "The enemies are trying to block all channels to obtain the surrender of the Iranian people. As they have failed to achieve their goal through military means, they are leading to internal weakening," and emphasized, "We will definitely thwart the enemies' prayers through harmony and unity."
