U.S. and Russian special envoys held talks in Moscow for more than three hours to discuss substantive plans to end the Russia-Ukraine war

U.S. President Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow for more than three hours on the 5th. The White House confirmed on the 6th that the two sides had discussed a "substantial plan" to end the Russia-Ukraine war, and relevant follow-up steps are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

This meeting is part of the Trump administration’s recent resumption of peace mediation between Russia and Ukraine. AFP reported that White House officials said Weikov discussed the next steps to end the war with Kushner and Putin, and relevant arrangements will be announced in the coming weeks.

Russia did not announce the details of the plan, nor did it announce a new peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine. The talks lasted for more than three hours, but public information does not yet show that the two sides have reached an agreement on the core disputes.

Next stop: Kyiv, Zelensky takes over

After Weikov and Kushner finish their trip to Moscow, they are expected to go to Kiev to meet with Ukrainian President Zelensky. This is also the first time the two have traveled to the Ukrainian capital since Trump returned to the White House. Agence France-Presse pointed out that Trump sent two people to Moscow and Kiev in the hope of confirming whether it is still possible to advance peace negotiations in the Russia-Ukraine war.

Even as the U.S. special envoy began to mediate, the Russian-Ukrainian battlefield continued to be attacked by missiles and drones. Zelensky previously proposed that Ukraine could stop air strikes during the visit of the US special envoy and asked Russia to take the same measures; Russia did not respond immediately at the time.
