Political scientist admitted Trump's refusal to support Taiwan in exchange for concessions to China

US President Donald Trump may refuse to support Taiwan, political scientist Dmitry Zhuravlev admitted. The political scientist spoke about the ability of the American leader to take such a step after the demand of Chinese President Xi Jinping in a conversation with Lenta.ru.

“Trump could, in principle, abandon support for Taiwan in exchange for some kind of concession from China. I don’t see any concessions of this magnitude yet. In principle, this is possible, because Trump needs some kind of movement. He can’t win parliamentary elections with anything else, there’s simply nothing else,” Zhuravlev said.

At the same time, the political scientist noted that both houses of the US Congress will most likely not refuse to support Taiwan.

“On the third hand, the Taiwanese, if we take ordinary citizens rather than the authorities, would prefer to join rich, huge, developing China than to remain under American jurisdiction,” Zhuravlev shared.

Earlier, Xi Jinping demanded that the United States oppose separatism in Taiwan. It is noted that the Chinese leader outlined China’s principled position to Donald Trump.
