Nuclear power company's net profit drops 8% to 4.1 billion yen; 9th consecutive year in the black due to basic charges from major power companies

Japan Atomic Power Company (NEPCO) announced its financial results for the fiscal year ending March 2026 on the 21st, with net profit, which indicates final profit, down 8.0% from the previous year to 4.12 billion yen. Although it is not foreseeable whether the two nuclear power plants it owns will be restarted, the company has been in the black for nine consecutive years thanks to the revenue from the "basic charges" paid by the major power companies with which it has contracts to purchase electricity.

Nuclear Power Co., Ltd. has Tsuruga No. 2 (Fukui Prefecture) and Tokai No. 2 (Ibaraki Prefecture) reactors, and during this period received a total of 107.6 billion yen in basic charges from five major electric power companies (Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Kansai Electric Power, Chubu Electric Power, Tohoku Electric Power, and Hokuriku Electric Power). The basic fees paid since the service was suspended after the Great East Japan Earthquake are estimated to be around 1.6 trillion yen.
