Survey of Quad countries' perceptions of China and the United States, Japan perceives China as the most "toxic"

[Sydney Current Affairs] The Center for American Studies at the University of Sydney in Australia has released the results of an attitude survey conducted among the four countries that make up the ``Quad'' cooperative framework: Japan, the United States, Australia, and India. In Asia, the percentage of people who answered that ``the United States is harmful'' was high in Australia and India, exceeding those who said ``useful.'' The view that ``China is harmful'' is higher than that of ``useful'' in all Quad countries, and Japan stands out in terms of distrust.

When asked, ``Is the United States beneficial or harmful in Asia?'', 37% of people in India and 36% of Australians answered that it was ``harmful,'' and ``beneficial'' was in the 20% range in both cases. This appears to have been influenced by the high tariffs imposed by the Trump administration and the oil crisis caused by the conflict between the United States and Iran. On the other hand, Japan showed a relatively tolerant attitude toward the United States, with 42% saying it was "useful" and 12% saying it was "harmful."

The percentage of people who said China was "harmful" was highest in Japan at 57%, followed by 42% in Australia, 38% in India, and 35% in the United States. This reflects distrust over China's active maritime expansion, military expansion, and export restrictions on rare earths and other materials.

57% of people in India, 47% of Americans, 38% of Australians, and 33% of Japanese respondents said they fear military conflict between their country and China within 10 years. If their country were attacked by China, 68% of people in Australia, who have an alliance with the US, thought that the US would come to their aid, 60% of people in Japan, and 54% in India, which is not an ally of the US. 50% of people in Australia and India supported turning the Quad into a military alliance, and 44% of people in Japan and the US supported it.

The survey was conducted in May among approximately 1,000 adults in Japan, the United States, Australia, and India.
