Tensions escalate between Argentina and Britain over the Falkland Islands

In a speech to the nation on Friday, Milley considered that companies operating in the field of oil exploration in the Falkland Islands constitute a "strategic threat" to Argentine interests.

He also announced a plan to strengthen the resources of the Ministry of Defense with the aim of establishing an integrated naval base in the southern “Tierra del Fuego” (Tierra del Fuego) region.

For his part, the British minister responded through his account on the “X” platform, saying: “Milly’s overnight statements tell us more about internal politics in Argentina than they tell us about the Falkland Islands.”

Streeting stressed that "these islands are British because their inhabitants chose to be British, and our obligations towards them are absolute and unwavering."

It should be noted that the dispute over the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands (Malvinas) between Buenos Aires and London is a long-term historical dispute, as a war broke out between the two countries in 1982 that lasted for weeks and ended with Argentina’s defeat.

In 2013, a referendum was held on the islands in which the vast majority of the population voted in favor of remaining an overseas territory of the United Kingdom. However, the Argentine government at the time rejected the results of this referendum, stressing that it would not affect its historical territorial claims to the islands.
