The Guangdong Provincial Overseas Chinese Affairs Work Conference was held in Guangzhou on the 20th. The reporter learned from the Guangdong Provincial Overseas Chinese Affairs Department that in recent years, Guangdong has actively leveraged the advantages of key overseas Chinese hometowns and made solid contributions to "overseas Chinese" in the new era. Guangdong is the largest hometown of overseas Chinese in China. There are nearly 30 million overseas Chinese in Guangdong, about 116,000 returned overseas Chinese, and about 12.36 million overseas Chinese dependents. The number of overseas Chinese and returned overseas Chinese and their dependents ranks first in the country.
In recent years, Guangdong has made leveraging the advantages of gathering overseas Chinese and uniting overseas Chinese to promote high-quality development and achieve a two-way win-win situation an important part of the province's overseas Chinese affairs work. The 2026 Overseas Chinese Aid Guangdong Economic Development Promotion Conference, held in Guangzhou on April 16 this year, attracted more than 300 representatives of the overseas Chinese community and guests from all walks of life to discuss and cooperate. The conference also launched a series of special events called "Overseas Chinese Prospering Southern Guangdong" to provide a platform for the overseas Chinese community to accurately connect with high-quality development opportunities in Guangdong.
It is reported that since 2023, Guangdong has continued to promote the "Overseas Chinese Help Guangdong High-Quality Development Action" and established a closed-loop working mechanism of "provincial coordination, prefecture-level main stations, department coordination, and participation of the overseas Chinese community". At the same time, we have deepened the construction of the "Global Guangdong Trade" alliance of overseas Chinese businessmen and innovatively created the work brand of "Overseas Chinese Businessmen Prospering South Guangdong". Through activities such as "Chinese Businessmen Overseas Travel" and "Overseas Chinese Helping Thousands of Enterprises and Products Going Overseas", we have "invited in" and "went out" and held more than 100 special events such as overseas Chinese helping to attract investment and economic and trade cooperation.
According to statistics, since 2023, the province has launched 250 overseas Chinese-related projects worth more than 10 million yuan, with funds in place reaching 125 billion yuan.
In terms of conserving overseas Chinese resources, Guangdong insists on paying equal attention to new and old overseas Chinese, and actively does a good job in the work of new overseas Chinese and the new generation of Chinese. From August 4 to 6 this year, the 2026 "Young China Talk" Chinese New Generation Envoy Selection and Research Camp went to Jiangmen, Guangdong, the hometown of overseas Chinese, to carry out a journey of "tracing back to overseas Chinese roots, dialogue with civilizations, and pursuing dreams through science and technology". 33 Chinese teachers and students from Chinese schools in 10 countries including Germany, the Netherlands, Canada, the United States, and Japan participated, and the event received good results.
According to reports, over the years, Guangdong has continued to carry out multi-level activities such as the "Overseas Chinese and Hong Kong and Macao Youth Summer (Winter) Camp" and the Chinese Culture Paradise to enhance the cultural and emotional identification of overseas Chinese youth with their ancestral (native) country. In addition, various activities such as the "China Tour for Overseas Chinese in Guangdong", the "Suggestions for Southern Guangdong" national conditions inspection activities by representatives of the Guangdong overseas Chinese community, the red experience tour for high-level overseas Chinese talents returned to overseas Chinese, the "Southern Guangdong Overseas Chinese Lecture Hall", the Guangdong Overseas Chinese Community Youth Training Class, and the Overseas Friendship Training Class have led and attracted a large number of overseas Chinese talents to gather in Guangdong.
In terms of overseas Chinese culture, Guangdong insists on using the culture of the hometown of overseas Chinese, the culture of the ancestral homeland, and the culture of kinship to tell the story of China, the Greater Bay Area, and Guangdong to overseas countries. Since the beginning of this year, as the film "A Love Letter to Grandma" about overseas Chinese has become popular at home and abroad, Guangdong has successively held overseas overseas cultural tours, visits to overseas Chinese descendants, and essay writing activities for overseas Chinese teenagers in many overseas countries. The cumulative audience of various overseas overseas Chinese activities has exceeded 130 million people. New progress has been made in the protection, research and revitalization of overseas Chinese batches. A province-wide overseas Chinese batch archives management system has been established, with more than 340,000 files collected and more than 400 volumes of research results produced. This year, Guangdong is also soliciting manuscripts from overseas Chinese scientists, experts and scholars from all over the world to donate to the National Edition Library.
Research on overseas Chinese history and overseas Chinese cultural and museum undertakings have also made new progress. Six batches of 43 volumes of the "History of Overseas Chinese in Guangdong" series were published. The "History of Overseas Chinese in Guangdong" was published in three volumes with 2.5 million words. The "Comprehensive Collection of Documents on Overseas Chinese in Guangdong" was compiled and included in the provincial "15th Five-Year Plan" key project to strengthen the province culturally. The "Maritime Silk Road Overseas Chinese Museum Alliance" has attracted 112 member units from 20 countries and regions to join. In addition, Guangdong continues to build brands such as "Lingnan Culture · Shared by the Four Seas" and "Southern Cantonese Culture Overseas Travel" to promote the inheritance and dissemination of excellent traditional cultures such as Cantonese cuisine, traditional Chinese medicine, martial arts, and overseas Chinese culture at home and abroad.
In terms of safeguarding rights and interests, Guangdong’s public service system for overseas Chinese is increasingly improving. The "Regulations on the Protection of the Rights and Interests of Overseas Chinese in Guangdong Province" and the "Regulations on the Administration of Public Welfare Undertakings Donated by Overseas Chinese in Guangdong Province" have been revised successively, and actively advocated overseas Chinese donations to focus on the green and beautiful Guangdong, rural revitalization, public services and other fields. According to incomplete statistics, the province received a total of approximately 7 billion yuan in donations from overseas Chinese from 2018 to 2025. Guangdong has also established a volunteer service expert group for overseas Chinese to create a 24-hour legal service ecosystem for overseas Chinese. It has launched the "Guangzhou Notary Remote WeChat Processing Platform" to solve the cross-border certification problems of overseas Chinese. It regularly holds "Overseas Chinese Health Week" free clinic activities and has provided legal services to nearly 10,000 overseas Chinese. More than 110,000 overseas Chinese and returned overseas Chinese and their family members have received medical services.
