EU Commission plans to expand its representation in Greenland

According to Euractiv's news, based on EU officials, after the US recently moved its consulate in Nuuk to a larger building, the EU Commission is also working on a plan to move its representative office to a larger venue.

The Commission's increase in the number of staff in Greenland is intended to support local authorities in converting EU funds into projects and carrying out the necessary administrative processes.

While the EU has recently been trying to increase its strategic presence in the Arctic region, France and Canada opened diplomatic representations in Greenland this year.

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a 200 million euro investment package for the region during her visit to Greenland on September 6-7. The funding must be allocated to specific projects until 2028 under the current EU long-term budget.

It is envisaged that EU funds will be directed to specific projects such as housing, energy infrastructure and data centers, rather than being transferred directly to the Greenland budget.

Greenland, an autonomous region of Denmark with a population of approximately 56 thousand, has been the subject of tension between Washington and Brussels for a while due to US President Donald Trump's statements that the US should maintain control over Greenland.

While Trump argues that Greenland is of strategic importance for the security of the USA, the Danish and Greenlandic administrations emphasize that the island is not "for sale". The EU administration, on the other hand, focuses on increasing cooperation with the region and its presence on the island, especially in the fields of Arctic security and critical raw materials.
