Accidents on MS highways leave 5 dead and more than 40 injured during long weekend

In total, 5 people died and 41 were injured in 33 accidents on the highways of Mato Grosso do Sul. The report covers September 4th to 7th.

The Federal Highway Police recorded 27 accidents, with 4 deaths and 38 injuries. Agents applied 1,459 fines and inspected 5,724 people during the period.

The Military Highway Police Battalion recorded 6 accidents and 1 death. State police also seized more than 1.1 tons of marijuana.

Five people died and 41 were injured in 33 accidents recorded on state and federal highways in Mato Grosso do Sul during the long Independence holiday, between September 4th and 7th. The incidents were recorded by the Federal Highway Police (PRF) and the Military Highway Police Battalion (BPMR) during Operation Independence 2026.

The operation was carried out to reinforce road safety and monitor infractions. During the period, more than 1.1 tons of marijuana were also seized.

Federal highways

The PRF recorded 27 accidents. Four people died and 38 were injured.

During the four days of operation, agents inspected 5,724 people and 4,631 vehicles. In total, 1,459 fines were imposed.

Speeding was the most common infraction on federal highways in the state. Radars recorded 1,830 images of vehicles above the permitted limit. Police officers also collected 73 illegal vehicles and carried out 3,637 breathalyzer tests.

State highways

The BPMR recorded six accidents. One person died and three were injured.

Military police approached 2,251 people and inspected 1,732 vehicles. In total, 333 Traffic Infraction Notices (AIT) were issued.

The most frequent irregularities were driving an unlicensed vehicle, overtaking prohibited on a continuous yellow lane and driving without a driver's license. There were no arrests for drunk driving. Two drivers were fined for refusing to take a breathalyzer test.

Seizures

On state highways, the teams also seized 1,130 kilos of marijuana, two cell phones without receipts and three vehicles used to transport the cargo.

The military also recorded two incidents of smuggling and embezzlement. Two adults were detained and a teenager was apprehended.
