Adelaide murder trial hears accused woman prayed for forgiveness for 'mortal sin'

An Adelaide woman accused of murdering both of her parents was allegedly captured on covert police listening device recordings praying to God for forgiveness for a "mortal sin", a court has heard.

Raelene Polymiadis, 65, is standing trial in South Australia's Supreme Court charged with murdering her parents, Brenda and Lynton Anderson, using lethal doses of insulin.

She has pleaded not guilty.

The court has heard the elderly couple were both aged 94 when they died 14 months apart in March 2022 and May 2023, respectively, and were not diabetic, but that Ms Polymiadis had the condition and managed it using insulin.

In the recordings, which the jury was told were captured inside a car on the morning of June 23, 2023, a woman alleged to be Ms Polymiadis could be heard praying and saying, "please Lord, forgive my sins".

"What I did was a mortal sin," she said in the recording.

"To see my father and my mother begging me … I just wanted them to be in your glory, Lord."

The recordings also capture the woman saying her parents "did their best to raise me", and that she was "terrified and I am frightened and I am so worried for my children".

"I just don't know what to do, Lord. I didn't do it for any reason other than to try and put my mum and dad out of pain, Lord, that was ultimately … what it was about, Lord," she said.

"Ultimately, I wanted my parents to not have to go through the pain.

"Please Lord, please Lord, please Lord."

The jury had previously been played earlier covert recordings, which prosecutors alleged were captured as Ms Polymiadis was driving to an interview with police on June 20, 2023.

In those recordings, a voice was heard saying, "Please Lord, yes I have sinned, I have sinned twice … but I also know with your blessing, Lord, they did not want to go to a nursing home".

Prosecutors have also previously told the jury Ms Polymiadis allegedly wrote a set of notes that were found during a search of her home and car, and which allegedly detailed what she should be saying to police when she spoke with them.

Ms Polymiadis's defence barrister, Marie Shaw KC, previously told the jury that the context of Ms Polymiadis's alleged confession would be an issue in the trial.

The trial is continuing.
