China News Service, Haikou, November 3rd The 8th Hainan Island International Film Festival will kick off in December 2026. As one of the important industry activities of this film festival, the AI Film Exhibition takes "Beyond Generation" as its theme and "movie level" as its common yardstick, focusing on new works, new methods and creators after AI enters real film creation and film and television production.
This AI Film Exhibition is hosted by the Hainan Island International Film Festival Organizing Committee and jointly sponsored by the AI Art Innovation Alliance (AIAIA), the Academy of Science and Art of the Beijing Film Academy, and the Imaging and Technology School of the School of Design of the Central Academy of Fine Arts.
"We are not just looking for movies made with AI, but also hope to discover people who are redefining movies." Xie Limei, chief planner of the AI Film Exhibition and secretary-general of AIAIA, said that when AI generation gradually becomes the basic ability of film and television creation, what is truly scarce is no longer the generation ability, but human creative judgment, director ability, original stories, and the ability to transform AI into productivity. The value of the new film industry in the AI era is not just about the speed of production or production costs, but also about whether the creator can control the story and audio-visual language, whether the team can collaborate, iterate and deliver stably, and whether the work can establish a relationship with the audience.
This AI Film Exhibition will focus on the AI film works themselves, using "movie level" as the unified standard for measuring works.
As the core annual collection unit, there are four major units for collection of works: "AI movie-level feature films", "AI premium drama series", "AI movie-level short films" and "AI experimental images". Among them, feature films are regarded as the most cutting-edge exploration of AI movies. They test the complete capabilities of narrative, characters, art, music, mixed production and team collaboration, and are also closest to the standards of the traditional film industry.
In addition to the solicitation unit, this AI Film Exhibition also includes 2026 AI Film Exhibition Selection, 2026 AI Movie Director's Selection, 2026 AI Movie Screenwriter's Selection, 2026 AI Movie Digital Performance Selection, 2026 AI Movie Image Selection, 2026 The AI Film Sound Selection and other annual selection channels select outstanding works from the dimensions of story and structure, originality and artistic expression, creative integration of AI, characters and performances, world design and imagination, image editing and technical completion, music and sound, etc. About 50 works are planned to be selected for the film exhibition to compete for the 2026 selection.
This year’s AI Film Exhibition will join hands with the Beijing Film Academy’s Academy of Science and Art to jointly release relevant research reports, focusing on “where has AI come in professional film creation?” and presenting the true capabilities of AI in film production and the areas that need to be broken through. The film exhibition will also work with the Imaging and Technology Department of the School of Design, Central Academy of Fine Arts to explore image expression and artistic innovation driven by technology.
It is reported that the collection of films is already in progress and will close on November 15th. In addition to the annual solicitation unit and the above-mentioned plans, sections such as the AI Film Screening Party/Salon and AI Film Exhibition Night will be unveiled one after another.
