'Insulting the President' case against Academician Suay Karaman

A lawsuit was filed against Suay Karaman, academician, writer, General Secretary of the All Teaching Staff Association (TÜMÖD) and President of the 1961 Constitution and Contemporary Democracy Foundation, on the grounds of "insulting the President", citing her social media post.

Karaman made the post used as a justification for the case on his social media account 11 years ago. He repeated this post 6 years ago.

The message, which was shared again 6 years ago, was used as a justification for the "insulting the President" case.

Suay Karaman shared the image on her social media platform, which includes the photo of AKP President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the text "He called out to the world from Indonesia, 'Our only concern is Islam, Islam, Islam'" and made the following comment:

"Our only concern is

HUMAN, HUMAN, HUMAN..

But he who does not steal,

living with dignity

He who does not sell his homeland..

Our other problem is

COUNTRY, COUNTRY, COUNTRY..

But what was not sold to the imperialists

Sèvres plans not implemented

What happens in friendship..."

Due to this post, Suay Karaman was requested to be punished in accordance with Articles 299/1-2, 53/1 of the Turkish Penal Code on the grounds that "by posting an insulting post against the President, she attacked the honor, dignity and prestige of the President and damaged the reputation of the President in the eyes of the society, thus committing the crime of insulting the President."

The first hearing of the case will be held on Friday, September 18, 2026, at 13:45, at the Ankara Judicial Courthouse (Sıhhiye) 90th Criminal Court of First Instance.
