At least five dead in Amazon cargo plane crash at Miami International Airport

At least five people died after an Amazon cargo plane crashed after skidding off the runway after landing at Miami International Airport, authorities confirmed.

In a press conference, Miami-Dade County Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz confirmed that five people died in the accident and that five others were injured and taken to the hospital.

Three of the injured are in critical condition, Erica Benitez, chief of staff of the Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue Department, reported at the press conference.

The plane collided with several vehicles and more than 60 units of the Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue Corps moved to the scene of the incident, as reported by this department on Facebook.

Benitez highlighted that, upon arrival, professionals focused on extinguishing the fire and saving several victims who were trapped in vehicles hit by the aircraft.

The affected plane is a Boeing 767-300 operated by 21 Air that left the runway around 2:00 p.m. local time (20:00 GMT) and that came from the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, in Puerto Rico, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which has opened an investigation into the event.

Likewise, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) noted in X that it has sent an intervention team to investigate the accident.

Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel told NBC News that the company is "working closely with local authorities to understand exactly what happened": "At this time, our top priority is the safety, well-being and care of everyone involved."

In images spread on social networks you can see the plane stranded in the middle of the road, with a large flare of smoke behind it.

All runways and taxiways at the airport remain closed and all takeoffs and landings scheduled for today have been suspended, the airport itself reported in its X profile.
