At least five people died after a Boeing plane carrying goods for Amazon crashed off the runway and hit several vehicles in Miami.

The incident occurred when the Boeing 767, coming from San Juan city in Puerto Rico, landed on runway number 30, which is more than 2,700 meters long, at Miami International Airport on the afternoon of September 6, according to data from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The plane is operated by 21 Air, which has an operations center in Miami and specializes in flying for companies like Amazon and DHL using Boeing 767 aircraft.

Photos at the scene show the plane's nose pointing to the ground with its tail pointing up.

The accident killed 5 people and injured 5 others, of which three were in critical condition. Some victims were trapped inside vehicles hit by the plane and had to be evacuated. Response forces are dealing with the fuel leak.

Miami-Dade County Fire and Rescue said more than 60 units responded to the scene. The plane caught fire with "huge flames and thick smoke". No debris or parts of the plane were found on the runway, but the plane damaged navigation equipment while ejecting.

It is unclear why the plane could not stop. Air traffic control's recording shows that the pilot did not announce an emergency during landing, according to CNN.

An Amazon spokesperson said the company is working closely with local authorities to learn more and will fully cooperate with any investigation. The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is gathering information about the incident and the FAA will open an investigation.

All runways and taxiways at Miami airport were closed as of 3:00 p.m. on September 6. US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said there would be significant delays and flights could be cancelled.

Planes sliding off the runway are the most common aircraft-related incidents in the world, according to data from the International Air Transport Association. Like at many other airports, the runway at Miami International Airport has a safety area that acts as a buffer zone in the event of such an incident.
