The strongest indication yet came from TSN insider Darren Dreger, who believes Washington is preparing for a future without its longtime captain. Speaking on OverDrive, Dreger suggested the organization's recent activity reflects an expectation that Ovechkin will not return. “Just how active Chris Patrick and the Capitals have been, all indications are he’s not [coming back], but we don’t know that officially yet,” Dreger said. Nothing has been confirmed by either Ovechkin or the Capitals, but the timing of those comments has naturally sparked fresh debate among fans. Ovechkin finished last season by playing all 82 regular-season games and scoring 32 goals, pushing his career total to 929. Despite those accomplishments, Ovechkin has repeatedly stressed that any decision about another season depends on more than personal milestones. “Obviously, if I want to come back, it has to be a decision. So there’s no timeline… He did mention and say today that he’s following and seeing the moves and was really happy for the organization about acquiring Jordan and Alex. ” General manager Chris Patrick also acknowledged that the organization has an internal timeline, though he declined to reveal it publicly. “In my mind, I do (have a timeline). I’m not going to say it because then everyone would have a deadline,” Patrick continued. “I think we’ll have a conversation in the near future and get a good sense of where he’s at.” For now, Washington continues to wait.
