Amazon cargo plane skids off runway at Miami airport, killing five

At least five people were killed after an Amazon cargo plane skidded off the runway at Miami International Airport, authorities said.

“We can confirm that at least five people have died,” Miami-Dade County Mayor Danielle Levine Cava said at a news conference.

“Several people were transported to local hospitals with injuries of unknown severity,” she added.

The plane, arriving from Puerto Rico, skidded off the runway during landing and crashed into cars that were parked in the parking lot. A fire started at the scene.

“Prime Air flight 7598 skidded off the runway at around 2 p.m. today. The plane is inoperative in the northwest part of the airport,” the Miami airport said in a statement.

The incident reportedly occurred with a Boeing 767-300 that arrived from Luis Munoz Marin International Airport in Puerto Rico.

“We can confirm that an Amazon Air aircraft operated by 21 Air experienced an incident while attempting to land at Miami International Airport today,” said Amazon head of media relations Kelly Nantel.

“The situation is developing rapidly and we are still gathering information. "We are working closely with local authorities and officials to find out exactly what happened," she added.

Judging by data from open sources, the Boeing 767-33AER aircraft with registration number N1997A was produced in 1994.

The Amazon Air jet was scheduled to land on runway 30 at Miami Airport, which is 2,853 meters long. There are four runways in total at the airport.

According to data from the Flightradar24 service, at the moment of leaving the runway, the plane was moving at a speed of 112 knots (about 207 km/h).
