Amazon cargo plane overruns runway in Miami, at least five dead

A cargo plane belonging to online retailer Amazon overshot a runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday, hitting several vehicles and catching fire. According to authorities, at least five people were killed.

Three others were critically injured and two were taken to the hospital with less serious injuries, Miami-Dade County officials said. According to the fire department, more than 60 emergency vehicles were on site. The emergency services extinguished the fire and searched for possible injuries. The accident led to significant restrictions on air traffic.

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said the plane rolled over the end of the runway around 2 p.m. local time and crashed into several vehicles. Images from the scene of the accident showed that the aircraft appeared to be lying on its fuselage and remained largely intact despite the fire. The plane - a 32-year-old Boeing 767 - had taken off from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan on the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico.

On Sunday afternoon, around 250 flights were delayed, according to flight tracking service FlightAware. The FAA warned that disruptions could continue even after airport operations resume. Takeoffs and landings should initially only be possible to a limited extent. The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said it was collecting information about the accident.
