Apple to Appeal Decision Alleging Taptic Engine Patent Infringement in the US

Apple, in its statement regarding the penalty and patent infringement claim, said: "Apple's Taptic Engine is fundamentally different from Taction's technology. Taction's own product tests confirmed this during the hearing." he said.

“We do not use Taction's technology.” Apple stated that this was the highest patent infringement penalty ever imposed in the United States and announced that it would appeal the decision.

Taction's attorney, Lance Yang, said: "We are pleased that the jury ruled in favor of Taction and confirmed our patent rights." he said.

The US Federal Court of Appeals cleared the way for a retrial of the case last year after a federal judge in San Diego ruled in 2023 that Apple did not infringe the patents.

In June, the UK Competition Appeal Court heard consumer rights group Which? It approved the £3 billion ($4 billion) class-action lawsuit filed by Apple against Apple.

The decision paved the way for tens of millions of consumers to be included in the class action lawsuit. In the lawsuit, which was first submitted in November 2024, it was argued that Apple abused its dominant position by forcing iPhone and other device users to its own iCloud storage service and made it difficult for them to switch to competitors.

Consumer group Which? notes that Apple does this by technically restricting the way certain files are stored, associating iCloud with devices running the iOS operating system, and by directing users to its service through system designs and guidance. It is stated that this weakens competition and increases prices.
