Apple has historically waited for technologies to mature before entering markets, as seen with its approach to foldable smartphones. The company recently introduced AI enhancements to Siri with a privacy focus. John Ternus became CEO on September 1, succeeding Tim Cook.
Apple is unveiling its latest generation of iPhones, widely expected to include a foldable version, on Wednesday at an event headlined by new CEO John Ternus, who took over from Tim Cook on Sept. 1.
Many of Apple’s biggest rivals, such as Samsung, Motorola and Google, have already come out with foldable smartphones. But Apple is not one to rush on new technologies.
“The foldable launch is straight out of Apple’s playbook: Wait for the product to work out its kinks and for the market to offer glimpses of viability, then enter and shape the category,” said Forrester analyst Dipanjan Chatterjee. “The difference is that foldables still represent a minuscule share of the smartphone market. The test of Apple’s ambition will be whether it can expand that niche into a meaningful new segment.”
Compared with earlier generations, the iPhone 18 likely will cost more due partly to a global memory chip shortage. The iPhone 17's price ranges from $799 to $1,999 depending on the model.
Earlier this year, Apple unveiled artificial intelligence advances, including upgrades to its Siri assistant, emphasizing a focus on privacy and day-to-day use as the company tries to catch up with rivals on AI.
The keynote address for Ternus at the tech giant’s headquarters in Cupertino, California, will set the tone for his vision of Apple's future, Chatterjee said.
“John Ternus inherits perhaps the most successful consumer technology juggernaut in modern times. That is both a boon and a burden for him. Tim Cook’s perfected execution, scale, and monetization set a high bar, and Ternus must extend that run,” Chatterjee said. “But he must sustain that momentum while positioning Apple to disrupt itself in the near future, when the iPhone, or any smartphone for that matter, will cease to be the consumer’s primary conduit to the world.”

Grant de Swardt, an independent AI consultant in East Sussex, UK, reported unauthorized token usage on his Claude Max 20x account, which Anthropic traced to a compromised session key used to mint unauthorized OAuth tokens. The company suspended his account, issued a partial refund, and later reinstated it after two weeks, but de Swardt cancelled his subscription due to lack of itemized usage tracking and unresolved security concerns.

Cognition, developer of AI coding assistant Devin, raised $2 billion at a $48 billion valuation just four months after a $26 billion round, with annualized revenue growing from $492 million to $900 million. The round was led by Andreessen Horowitz, Accel, Founders Fund, General Catalyst, and Avenir. Cursor, a competitor, sold to SpaceX for $60 billion in April after talks to raise at $50 billion valuation. Cognition leases costly Nvidia servers and trains its own model to reduce reliance on OpenAI and Anthropic, projecting $4–5 billion revenue by end of 2026. Major customers include Mercedes-Benz, NASA, Goldman Sachs, and Citi.

The Exploration Company (TEC), a European space startup with operations across Germany, France, Luxembourg, Spain and Italy, has raised $450 million in a Series C round described as the largest by a European space company. The funding supports development of its reusable Nyx capsule and Storm rocket engine, with goals to dock with the ISS by November 2028. TEC joins U.S.-based Stoke Space, which is raising a $1 billion Series E, in attracting transatlantic investor interest in reusable spacecraft as alternatives to SpaceX’s growing dominance in low-Earth orbit launches.
