The man who tried to kidnap a little girl in Bergamo was acquitted: declared not attributable due to total mental defect

He had attempted to kidnap a little girl as she was leaving a supermarket in Bergamo with her mother. The man, immediately arrested by the police and currently hospitalized in a Rems, was acquitted by the Bergamo court as he was not attributable due to total mental defect. He was placed under security in a Rems for at least two years.

What had happened

The episode occurred last February 14th in broad daylight, around lunchtime: the man had suddenly grabbed a one and a half year old girl by the legs, attempting to tear her away from her mother who was holding her hand as they were leaving a supermarket. The woman managed to resist forcefully and immediately asked for help. The father had in turn intervened to block the attacker, helped by some passers-by and security personnel, until the arrival of the police. The little girl was then transported to hospital for clinical tests which revealed a fractured femur.
