Iguaçu athletes interrupt training to help flood victims in União da Vitória

Athletes from Associação Atlética Iguaçu, a football team from União da Vitória, in the south of Paraná, interrupted training this Friday (11), two days before a decisive game, to help victims of the city's flooding.

This Sunday (13) they compete in the quarter-finals of the third division of the Paranaense Championship, but after the coach received a call from the club's kitchen asking for help, they decided to change the field for solidarity.

"We joined forces here and preferred to cancel training; we believe that this would be much more important. We have already built everything for the game. [...] When we got there, more families were helpless, asking for help, and it turned out that we had to embrace the situation strongly and help everyone at the moment. For us, it was very gratifying", says coach Luiz Tosta.

Claudete, the club's cook, says that she first contacted Civil Defense, but they informed her that, due to the number of incidents recorded, they would only be able to go to her house later. As the water level was rising, she decided to try other options.

"The truck was going to arrive, I think at 7pm or 8pm... I sent a message to the teacher, he came and sent the 'piá' from Iguaçu. I'm happy and I really appreciate it! I thought I wasn't important to Iguaçu, but I think I'm important because they were all there together and I'm very grateful", says the professional.

União da Vitória has been facing problems with flooding for days. The city is crossed by the Iguaçu River, whose normal level is 3.5 meters.

This Saturday (12), at 2 pm, it was at 6,093 meters, according to hydrological monitoring by Companhia Paranaense de Energia (Copel). 24 hours earlier, the measurement had indicated 5.624 meters.

The Civil Defense report issued early this Saturday afternoon indicated that at least 400 people were affected by the flood.

In case of emergencies, information must be consulted with the Civil Defense (telephone 199) and the Fire Department (telephone 193).

Problems related to power cuts and fallen poles must be reported to Copel (telephone 0800 51 00 116).

Paraná residents can also receive alerts and information from the Civil Defense of Paraná on their cell phones about the risk of bad weather in their own region: simply send an SMS with the region's zip code to the number 40199. The Civil Defense responds with a registration confirmation message and from this moment on, the person will receive periodic alerts about the most serious situations in the indicated location.
