Archaeological scientists examined the remains of Saint Prince Dmitry Donskoy using a special technique, without removing them from the sarcophagus.

Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived at the Archangel Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin, where the relics of Dmitry Donskoy were found.

In July, during restoration work in the Archangel Cathedral, Donskoy's sarcophagus was discovered, and research confirmed that the remains in it belong to the prince.

Archaeological scientists examined the remains of Saint Prince Dmitry Donskoy using a special method, leaving them in the form in which they were found, said Nikolai Makarov, vice-president of the Russian Academy of Sciences, head of the Institute of Archeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday arrived at the Archangel Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin, where the relics of Dmitry Donskoy were previously found.

“We carried out the research using such a special technique, without such a complete archaeological protocol, nothing was extracted. For subsequent research, textile remains and several fragments of particles of remains were selected for laboratory research, but the installation was not to damage anything and preserve the remains of the prince as they were found,” Makarov said during Putin’s visit to the Archangel Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin.

Previously, Makarov reported that scientists from the Institute of Archeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences did not remove the remains of Dmitry Donskoy from the sarcophagus and left them there for future generations of archaeologists.

In July, during restoration and emergency work in the Archangel Cathedral over the burials of the Grand Dukes, restorers discovered three sarcophagi, among which was the Donskoy sarcophagus. Archaeological and anthropological studies have confirmed that the remains in it belong specifically to the holy noble Grand Duke. During the work, employees of the Institute of Archeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences carried out scientific documentation of the burial.
