Lamine Yamal enters his fourth season in the Champions League with a clear goal: to lead Barcelona to the continental title that has been absent from the club’s coffers for more than a decade, after the tournament turned for the Spanish star into a mixture of ambition and harsh memories.

After Yamal, who has completed his nineteenth year, won most of the major titles possible at this early stage of his career, the European Club Cup seems to be his most prominent goal this season, according to the Spanish newspaper “AS”. The player who became one of Barcelona's leaders and carried the No. 10 shirt is no longer just a rising talent, but has become one of the team's most important elements and the one most closely linked to its European hopes.

Lamin Yamal played 33 matches in the Champions League, during which he scored 11 goals, but he has not yet known the taste of qualifying for the final, after his previous three participations witnessed Barcelona’s exit in the knockout rounds, which left clear effects.

The start was in the quarter-finals of the 2023-2024 season against Paris Saint-Germain. After Barcelona won 3-2 in Paris, the Spanish team took the lead again in the second leg, before the match changed after Ronald Araujo was sent off. In that confrontation, coach Xavi made the decision to remove Yamal, who was only 16 years old at the time, before Paris Saint-Germain turned the score around and won 4-1, leaving Barcelona out of the tournament.

The following season, the hardest blow came against Inter Milan in the semi-finals. Barcelona was very close to reaching the final match after an exciting confrontation at the San Siro Stadium, when Yamal fired a shot that hit the post in the final minutes, in a shot that looked like it might give his team the pass.

Therefore, the new edition of the Champions League appears to be a different test for Yamal. The English Liverpool Football Club reached an agreement on a sponsorship contract with Turkish Airlines, to place its logo on the chest of the team’s red shirt, ending a sponsorship contract that lasted 17 seasons with Standard Chartered Bank, a partnership that was one of the most prominent partnerships in the world of football. The value of the contract concluded with Turkish Airlines, which extends for five years, is more than 60 million pounds ($81.2 million) per season starting in June 2027, making it among the largest contracts to sponsor shirts for teams in the English Premier League, according to Bloomberg News Agency, today, Tuesday.

In return, Standard Chartered Bank will become a secondary sponsor of Liverpool, which is considered one of the most famous clubs in the world. Jeff Bezos, co-founder of Amazon, recently joined the group of owners of the famous club, as the Standard Chartered logo has appeared on Liverpool's shirts since 2010, the year the club was sold to Fenway Sports Group, which also owns the Boston Red Sox baseball team.

The change comes as Standard Chartered shifts its focus to other sports, including Formula 1 motor racing. Since becoming the official shirt sponsor of Liverpool, the London bank has likely spent more than 500 million pounds on this deal, with the cost of the latest four-year extension in 2022 amounting to about 50 million pounds annually.

Liverpool is seeking to achieve more of this sponsorship with the entry into force of the new financial rules of football, which link the size of the club’s spending on new players and the size of its revenues. In the English Premier League, only Emirates Airlines has a longer sponsorship contract, having become the official shirt sponsor of Arsenal at the beginning of the 2006-2007 season.

Pressure mounted on Gianni Infantino, President of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), after the number of signatories to a complaint demanding that he be held accountable exceeded 100,000 people, in the latest move targeting his presidency, amid growing criticism regarding his relations with US President Donald Trump and a number of issues that sparked controversy within the International Federation.

The “Restart FIFA” campaign, in cooperation with the Fair Square organization concerned with human rights and governance issues, submitted the complaint to the FIFA Ethics Committee on Tuesday, demanding that an investigation be opened and action taken regarding what it described as a series of incidents that, according to those responsible for it, reflect an abuse of power and a violation of the duty of political neutrality and commitment to the federation.

The British newspaper The Guardian reported that the updated complaint includes eight facts, including the cancellation of the red card received by American Folarin Balogun during the World Cup, after Trump admitted that he had asked FIFA to review the penalty, in addition to the “FIFA Forward Enterprise” project, which sparked a widespread crisis within the International Federation before it was withdrawn.

The complaint also includes awarding Trump the FIFA Peace Prize, and Infantino’s participation in the “Peace Council” formed by the US President, in addition to previous statements in which the FIFA president pledged to work with Trump to “make America great again, and even the world, faster.”

Fair Square believes that these facts together represent evidence of Infantino’s failure to maintain the supposed political neutrality of the International Federation President, considering that the large number of signatories to the complaint reflects growing popular concern about the way FIFA is managed.

The organization said in a letter accompanying the complaint that the joining of more than 100,000 people to demand accountability represents “clear evidence of escalating public concern,” calling on the Ethics Committee to move quickly and transparently, as the independent judicial body charged with preserving the integrity of football and the reputation of the International Federation.

A first complaint was submitted to the Ethics Committee last December, but it did not receive a response, before it later gained the support of the Norwegian Football Association and 50 members of the European Parliament.

On the other hand, FIFA rejected the accusations, and when asked for comment, referred to a statement it had issued last month, in which it said that there were “coordinated and continuous efforts” by some parties to undermine the federation and its president, adding that those who do not enjoy the support of member federations should not try to achieve their goals through “allegations, insinuations, or misleading information.”

These developments come at a time when Infantino is facing increasing political and sporting pressure, especially from the European Football Association (UEFA), which demanded his departure and announced his intention to take legal action in the United States against the backdrop of the “FIFA Forward Enterprise” project.

Last Sunday, FIFA confirmed that Infantino intends to run for a fourth and final term in next year’s elections, despite growing opposition from UEFA and criticism within the Asian Confederation, the North and Central American Confederation, and CONCACAF.

The new complaint adds another front to the crisis surrounding Infantino before the election battle. At the same time, the FIFA president is facing pressure from continental federations, criticism due to his relationship with Trump, and legal moves related to the International Federation’s projects, as well as a popular campaign demanding that his leadership be held accountable.
