The Hague Tribunal refused to release General Ratko Mladic on humanitarian grounds

The International Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (ICT) in The Hague refused to release the former commander of the Bosnian Serb army, General Ratko Mladic, on humanitarian grounds, as it considered his possible imminent death to be an insufficient basis for this. This was stated in the press service of the tribunal, RIA Novosti reports.

The Hague court noted that Mladic's request for release on humanitarian grounds was based on the fact that his imminent death was inevitable and his transfer to Serbia would ensure the continued presence of his family members.

“The President of the Court considered that the comprehensive and humane medical care and support provided to him in all aspects of daily life in the prison hospital significantly exceeded established international standards,” the MOMUT press service said.

They emphasized that the inevitability of Mladic’s death did not in itself make his continued imprisonment incompatible with these rights.
