Child in coma in Sharm El Sheikh returned to Italy

Younes, the six and a half year old boy from Brandizzo, in the Turin area, who was hospitalized in a coma in Egypt after an accident in the swimming pool of a hotel in Sharm El Sheikh, returned to Italy in recent hours. The little boy is at the Regina Margherita hospital in Turin.

Younes, of Moroccan origins, had been hospitalized in serious condition in intensive care at the Pyramid International Hospital in Sharm El Sheikh since August 3. That day, the first of the family's holiday in Egypt, he had fallen into the pool after slipping while playing. He had hit his head, suffering a serious head injury with cerebral edema.

Today at 6pm a press conference is scheduled in the great hall of the Turin children's hospital, in the presence of the doctors, as well as the child's mother and uncle, dedicated to Younes' transfer to Italy and the joint work of institutions, healthcare facilities, private individuals and Third Sector organizations that made the operation possible.

The return of the child to Italy with an air ambulance was announced yesterday from Cairo by the deputy prime minister and foreign minister, Antonio Tajani. The Farnesina, through the Italian Embassy in Cairo and the honorary consul in Sharm El Sheik, has followed the case since the day of the accident, offering assistance to the family, covering part of the medical expenses and facilitating the connection between the parties involved: the Piramide Hospital in Sharm, the Regina Margherita Hospital in Turin and the Foundation that organizes the medical repatriation, as well as with the Egyptian institutions. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani followed all the developments closely in contact with the Embassy and with the President of the Piedmont Region, Alberto Cirio.
