Bank workers hold national strike this Thursday for better wages

Bank employees across the country are on strike this Thursday (20). According to the National Confederation of Financial Workers (Contraf), the mobilization should affect both public and private banks.

The category demands a real salary increase, increased flooring, meal and food vouchers, profit sharing (PLR) and the creation of a minimum wage for information technology (IT) workers.

“We will not leave this campaign without the fair appreciation of bank employees, who built profits of R$ 171 billion for banks in 2025, said the coordinator of the National Command and president of the Union of Bank Workers of São Paulo, Osasco and Region, Neiva Ribeiro.

For her, a major strike this Thursday (20) is essential to pressure bankers to present a good proposal in the next negotiation”.

According to Contraf, the banks have not presented any proposal for an adjustment index so far. A new negotiation meeting between the parties is scheduled for next Monday (24).

Bank employees highlight that the banking sector's net worth reached, in 2025, the amount of R$1.2 trillion. According to Contraf, the annual profit per employee in banks is R$438 thousand. The entity highlights that, in 1995, private banks distributed a percentage of PLR that reached 14%; in 2025, they distributed an average of just 5.9%.

The Brazilian Federation of Banks (Febraban) was contacted, but has not yet responded.
