Babies can leave the maternity ward with an identity card in RJ

Babies born in 21 public maternity hospitals in the State of Rio can leave the health unit with their National Identity Card (CIN). The service, offered free of charge by Detran RJ, works within maternity wards and aims to facilitate access to the first identification document and combat civil under-registration.

The issuance of the identity is exclusive to newborns in participating maternity hospitals and can also be used by parents or guardians. If the family is unable to complete the document before leaving hospital, it is possible to return to the unit to carry out the procedure within one year.

According to Detran RJ, in addition to ensuring more practicality for families, the service reinforces children's safety. Fingerprints are registered in the agency's database, which can help with identification in cases of disappearance, for example.

At Hospital Estadual da Mãe, in Mesquita, Baixada Fluminense, one of the units that offers the service, around 300 births are performed per month. The identification post operates from Monday to Friday, from 8am to 5pm, in a room close to the hospitalization beds. The maternity ward also has a registry office to issue birth certificates.

The service is carried out in partnership with the Public Ministry and the Public Defender's Office.

At just one week old, little Larah Aquino Costa left Hospital Estadual da Mãe, in Mesquita, Baixada Fluminense, with her first official photo duly registered on the National Identity Card (CIN). Residents of Duque de Caxias, parents Luana Aquino and Hugo took advantage of the service.

"I'm very happy because I was treated very well at the hospital and I'm leaving with my daughter's registration. It will save me the trouble of having to go out to get her license later. We feel more welcomed and safe, it couldn't be better. It was very quick and practical", praised Luana, 27 years old.
